Synopsis "USS ATA-216"

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! USS ATA-216 was an ATA-214-class tug of the United States Navy built near the end of World War II. Originally laid down as Allthorn (YN-94), a net tender of the Ailanthus class, she was redesignated as AN-70, a net layer, before launch. Before completion, the name Allthorn was cancelled and the ship was named ATA-216, an unnamed auxiliary ocean tug. Allthorn (YN-94) was laid down on 31 October 1943 at Slidell, Louisiana, by the Canulette Shipbuilding Co. On 20 January 1944 she was redesignated AN-70. She was launched on 27 May 1944, but, on 12 August 1944, her name was cancelled and her designation was changed to that of an auxiliary ocean tug. She became simply ATA-216.
