The play revolves around young David who has been assigned the position of secret messenger as he encounters such historical figures as Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, John Wilkes Booth, and the famous detective Allen Pinkerton. Chorpenning's detail of authenticity includes using actual dialogue from speeches of people in the plot to assassinate Lincoln making this a truly remarkable drama for young audiences. Originally produced by the Goodman Theatre, Chicago. One of America's pioneers in children's theatre, Charlotte B. Chorpenning served as the first Artistic Director of the Goodman Theatre Children's Theatre. She studied playwrighting at Radcliff College and her plays were originally produced by the Federal Theatre Project. She joined the drama and theatre faculty of Northwestern University where she co-founded the Children's World Theatre. Her plays for children continue to be produced by theaters across the country and are now considered classics
