Karen Wynn Fonstad (1945–2005) was an American cartographer and academic known for her detailed atlases of fictional worlds, especially those based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Born in Oklahoma City, she earned a bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy and a master's degree in Geography with a specialization in Cartography at the University of Oklahoma. In 1970, she married Todd Fonstad and moved to Wisconsin, where she dedicated herself to cartography and teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Her interest in fantasy cartography began in 1969, when a colleague redrew the map of Middle-earth as an academic project. This inspired her to read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, works that deeply captivated her. In 1977, following the publication of The Silmarillion, she decided to create an exhaustive atlas of Middle-earth. The result was The Atlas of Middle-earth (1981), a work that combined geographical rigor with Tolkien's literary richness, detailing maps of routes, battles, and geological formations.

Her success led her to create other atlases of fictional worlds, such as those of Pern, Krynn (Dragonlance), The Land (Chronicles of Thomas Covenant), and Forgotten Realms (Dungeons & Dragons). These works influenced generations of fantasy cartographers. Additionally, she was active in her local community and church. She passed away in 2005 due to complications from breast cancer.
