Der wissenschaftliche Name geht auf die 1787 erstmals beschriebene Typgattung Acanthurus zurck, deren Bezeichnung ihrerseits aus dem Griechischen , cantha, der Stachel und , our, der Schwanz zusammengesetzt ist.
