Paolo Cherchi Usai
Paolo Cherchi Usai is a distinguished Italian historian, curator, and filmmaker, known for his work in the preservation and restoration of silent cinema. Born in Italy, he has developed an international career focused on the preservation of film heritage.
In 1982, he co-founded the Giornate del Cinema Muto in Pordenone, one of the most important festivals dedicated to early cinema. In 1996, he founded the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation in Rochester, New York, the first institution of its kind in the United States. Between 2004 and 2008, he served as the director of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, and later directed the Haghefilm Foundation in Amsterdam until 2011. Currently, he is Senior Curator of the Moving Image Department at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York, and co-founder of the Film Heritage Foundation in India.
Cherchi Usai has written extensively about the history of cinema and its preservation, with works translated into more than twenty languages. Among his most notable publications are Una passione infiammabile: guida allo studio del cinema muto (1991), Silent Cinema: A Guide to Study, Research and Curatorship (2019), and Film Curatorship: Archives, Museums, and the Digital Marketplace (2008). He has also directed feature films Passio (2007) and Picture (2015), both focused on the theme of cinema and its preservation.
In recognition of his contribution to the world of cinema, in 2002 he was named Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the Ministry of Culture of France.
His work has been fundamental to the study and preservation of silent cinema, ensuring that future generations can access this valuable cultural heritage.
