June Jordan
June Jordan (July 9, 1936 – June 14, 2002) was an influential American poet, essayist, playwright, and activist, known for her commitment to civil rights, social justice, and gender and sexual equality. Born in Harlem, New York, to a family of Jamaican immigrants, Jordan began writing poetry at an early age and was educated at Barnard College.
Throughout her career, Jordan published over 27 books, including Some Changes (1971), Civil Wars (1981), Kissing God Goodbye (1997), and Directed by Desire: The Collected Poems (2005). Her work spans poetry, essays, drama, and children's literature, and is characterized by its accessible language and focus on themes such as racial identity, oppression, sexuality, and memory. In her writings, she advocated for the use of African American English as a legitimate form of cultural expression.
Jordan was also a prominent educator and activist. At the University of California, Berkeley, she founded the Poetry for the People program, which aimed to empower students through poetry. Additionally, she taught at institutions like Yale and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Her legacy continues as a powerful voice in American literature and activism.
