Since 1980, he has served as a senior researcher in the Department of Volcanology at the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM. His work focuses on the study of seismic and volcanic activity in Mexico, with special attention to the western region of the country. He has participated in projects such as the study of the crust architecture in the collision zone between the Rivera and North American plates in the Jalisco block.
In addition to his research work, Espíndola Castro has contributed to scientific dissemination. He is the author of the book The Third Planet: Age, Structure, and Composition of the Earth, published by the Economic Culture Fund. This text offers a historical review and a general study of the characteristics of our planet, aimed at the general public.
His work has been fundamental in understanding the seismic and volcanic risks in Mexico, contributing to the development of prevention and mitigation strategies.
