Francisco Hernández Astete
Francisco Hernández Astete is a Peruvian historian specialized in the study of the pre-Hispanic Andean world, with an emphasis on the political and symbolic organization of the Tahuantinsuyo. He holds a PhD in History from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a master's degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), where he serves as a principal professor, and has dedicated his career to researching Inca power structures and their relationship with memory and ancestors. Among his most notable works are Los incas y el poder de sus ancestros (2012), Sobre los incas (2011, co-authored with Liliana Regalado), La élite incaica y la articulación del Tahuantinsuyo (2010) and La mujer en el Tahuantinsuyo (2002, 2005)
His approach combines critical analysis of colonial sources with an interdisciplinary perspective that incorporates archaeology, linguistics, and anthropology. Although his production is within the academic sphere, his books have contributed to renewing the understanding of Inca power and society, challenging traditional notions such as the existence of the panacas or the omnipotence of the inca. To date, no notable literary awards are known, but his work has been widely recognized in academic and cultural circles.
