He is the author of sixteen novels and several plays. He has won numerous awards, such as the National Book Award for White Noise (1985; Seix Barral, 2006), the International Fiction Prize for Libra (1988; Seix Barral, 2006), the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for Mao II (1991; Seix Barral, 2008), the Howells Medal for Underworld (1997; Seix Barral, 2009) and the PEN/Saul Bellow Award and the Jerusalem Prize for his entire career.
