Eine Auswahl von 66 Gedichten aus dem lyrischen Gesamtwerk von Christian Morgenstern, der die deutsche Literatur um eine besondere Spielform des Komischen bereichert hat, welche ein verführerisches Amalgam aus Unsinn, Widersinn und Tiefsinn darstellt und als humoristische Gedankenlyrik oder auch metaphysischer Nonsens bezeichnet worden ist. Auf den Humoristen reduzieren lässt sich Morgenstern aber nicht: Neben vielem, das uns heute nicht mehr überzeugt, hat er auch im Bereich der ernsten Lyrik einiges Vorzeigbare und darum in der Auswahl Berücksichtigte verfasst. Der Band enthält Gedichte aus 11 zu Lebzeiten veröffentlichten Büchern sowie Verse aus dem Nachlass. Hinzu kommt ein Autor und Werk einer kritischen Würdigung unterziehendes Nachwort.
