Schon als Kind blätterte er gern in den Modemagazinen seiner Mutter, stöberte in ihrem Kleiderschrank. Als er elf war, nahmen ihn seine Eltern ins Theater mit, die Kostüme in Molières Schule der Frauen taten es ihm besonders an. Er begann, Skizzen und Entwürfe für die Bühne anzufertigen. Von seinen Mitschülern gemobbt, flüchtete er in die Welt der Mode. Er zog aus dem algerischen Oran nach Paris, wo er mit 21 künstlerischer Leiter bei Dior wurde. Dann gründete er seine eigene Firma: Yves Saint Laurent. Sein Name war Programm und stand für eine Revolution der Modewelt. Vor allem die Frauen profitierten davon, für die er mit »Le Smoking« den Hosenanzug salonfähig machte.
