A major theme running through the various parts of the novel is that of "Entsagung," translatable as "renunciation." The most famous section of the novel is probably the episode in which the protagonist and his son Felix visit the "Pedagogical Province."

Thomas Carlyle (Thomas Carlyle, nacido el 4 de diciembre de 1795 en Ecclefechan, Escocia, y fallecido el 5 de febrero de 1881 en Londres) fue un ensayista, historiador y pensador clave de la era victoriana. Formado en la Universidad de Edimburgo, inició su carrera como profesor antes de consolidarse como escritor.
