Das Speculum universale des Radulfus Ardens ( um 1200) ist die umfangreichste Gesamtdarstellung einer theologischen Ethik im 12. Jahrhundert. Sie umfasst eine allgemeine Tugendlehre und eine breite Entfaltung der einzelnen Tugenden und Laster. Wahrend die Fruhscholastik die Tugenden vor allem als Resultat der Gnade Gottes verstand, thematisiert sie Radulfus auch von der Seite des Menschen her. Er entwickelt vor der Rezeption der Nikomachischen Ethik des Aristoteles eine eigenstandige Untergliederung der Tugenden, die er erstmals auch in den Vermogen der Seele verankert. Der Band enthalt die entscheidenden Passagen aus Buch I und V mit der Analyse des Entwicklungsprozesses der Tugenden und Laster.
