Synopsis "Who was Martin Luther King, Jr. "

The story of one of the most influential civil rights activist of our time. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was only 25 when he helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott and was soon organizing black people across the country in support of the right to vote, desegregation, and other basic civil rights. Maintaining nonviolent and peaceful tactics even when his life was threatened, King was also an advocate for the poor and spoke out against racial and economic injustice until his death--from an assassin's bullet--in 1968. With clearly written text that explains this tumultuous time in history and 80 black-and-white illustrations, this Who Was? celebrates the vision and the legacy of a remarkable man.

Bonnie has written over 50 books for young readers, including 6 books from the popular Who Was? series, picture books, and several licensed tie-in books. She was an associate editor at Penguin Young Readers for 14 years, where she edited many successful series and created the Penguin Young Readers leveled reading program

Stepping back a bit, Bonnie is a true New Yorker. She was born in Queens, attended Forest Hills High School, and went to SUNY Binghamton, where she majored in English and Economics. Between her junior and senior year of college, Bonnie landed a summer job at Ballantine Books, where she eventually got her first job. After realizing she enjoyed working on children's books more than adult books, Bonnie embarked on a career in the children's publishing world. Along the way, Bonnie earned a Master's in Education Sciences, got married, and had two beautiful daughters. (And got a dog!)

Currently, Bonnie serves on the Advisory Board of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and acts as an Editorial Advisor for the Society. When Bonnie is not working for the SCBWI, she teaches classes to published and pre-published authors and illustrators, creates new stories, and visits classrooms to share her love for reading and writing.
