El viaje se realiza durante la luna llena y, aunque la idea de los tripulantes era aterrizar en el satélite, pronto se dan cuenta de que están atrapados orbitando alrededor de él. Hacen conjeturas sobre la posibilidad de vida selenita, y después de comprobar que en el lado de la Luna que siempre mira a la Tierra, ampliamente explorado por los telescopios de la época, no hay indicio de vida, se internan en el otro lado. Como todo esto transcurre durante la luna llena, el lado oculto se encuentra absolutamente a oscuras. Sin embargo, estalla un bólido que hace posible, apenas por unos instantes, ver bien la superficie lunar de cerca, y los personajes se dan cuenta de que, en el pasado, la Luna tuvo continentes, ciudades y vida selenita que luego sería destruida. Tras un tiempo orbitando la Luna logran encontrar una forma de regresar: utilizan los cohetes que tenían en la parte posterior de la bala (que originalmente planeaban usar para amortiguar su alunizaje) para romper la influencia gravitacional del satélite y encaminarse hacia la Tierra. Caen en el océano y las mismas características del proyectil que los mantenía vivos en el espacio les permite permanecer tranquilamente en el mar hasta que los rescatan. Having been fired out of the giant Columbiad space gun, the Baltimore Gun Club's bullet-shaped projectile, along with its three passengers, Barbicane, Nicholl and Michel Ardan, begins the five-day trip to the moon. A few minutes into the journey, a small, bright asteroid passes within a few hundred yards of them, but luckily does not collide with the projectile. The asteroid had been captured by the Earth's gravity and had become a second moon. The three travelers undergo a series of adventures and misadventures during the rest of the journey, including disposing of the body of a dog out a window, suffering intoxication by gases, and making calculations leading them, briefly, to believe that they are to fall back to Earth. During the latter part of the voyage, it becomes apparent that the gravitational force of their earlier encounter with the asteroid has caused the projectile to deviate from its course.
