Gabor Maté is a Canadian physician and author of Hungarian origin, known for his humanistic approach to issues such as trauma, addiction, and child development. With a career spanning over four decades, he has worked as a family doctor and in palliative care, as well as with vulnerable populations in Vancouver. Among his most notable works are When the Body Says No (2003), Scattered Minds (1999), In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts (2008), and The Myth of Normal (2022), the latter co-written with his son Daniel Maté. He is also the co-author of Hold On to Your Kids (2004), with Gordon Neufeld.

His work has been recognized with various awards, including the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize in 2009 and the Vine Award for Canadian Jewish Literature in 2023. In 2018, he was appointed a member of the Order of Canada for his contributions to the understanding of mental health and addiction treatment. Maté has significantly influenced the discourse on emotional health, advocating for a more compassionate and holistic view of human well-being.
