La tesis de este libro podría resumirse en la frase siguiente: no es posible formar sin transformar. Ahora bien, los seres humanos no soportan las transformaciones a cualquier precio. De ahí que necesiten "lugares de asilo" (físicos y simbólicos). Unas transformaciones excesivamente aceleradas y violentas suelen abrir peligrosos ámbitos deformativos. Por esta razón no hay formación sin transformación, pero un exceso de transformación deforma.La filosofía que aquí se presenta es una filosofía antropológica que, frente a la "voluntad de sistema" de los grandes edificios metafísicos, reivindica la "escena narrativa", una escena fragmentaria y ensayística.Esta filosofía antropológica es netamente "pedagógica" porque considera que su tarea fundamental es enseñar (y aprender) a vivir y a morir. Y para ello los seres humanos no disponen de verdades firmes y seguras, lo que no significa que anden a la intemperie. Aprender a vivir y a morir es saber mantener un inestable equilibrio en un universo de transformaciones inacabables. Por eso, hombres y mujeres necesitan "puntos de apoyo", que siempre serán débiles e inciertos, ambiguos y ambivalentes. En estos ensayos se reflexiona sobre uno, el que el autor considera más importante, la ética.

Joan-Carles Mèlich (Barcelona, 1961) holds a PhD in Philosophy and Letters from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He currently serves as a full professor of Philosophy of Education at the same university. He has published, among other titles, Philosophy of Finitude (2002), Ethics of Compassion (2010), and Logic of Cruelty (2014). The Stage of Existence brilliantly culminates a cycle of narrative philosophy initiated with The Wisdom of Uncertainty (Tusquets Editores, 2019), a work followed in this same collection by The Fragility of the World, awarded the National Essay Prize 2022.
