Thomas Lynch (Detroit, 1948), American poet and essayist, director for over forty years of a funeral home in Milford, Michigan, is the author of the poetry books Skating With Heather Grace (1987), Grimalkin and Other Poems (1994), Still Life in Milford (1998) and the essay book Bodies in Motion and at Rest (2000). Lynch's poems and essays have appeared in major publications such as The New Yorker, Harper's, The Paris Review, The Washington Post, and The London Review of Books, among others. He has received several awards both domestically and internationally, including those given by The National Book Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, and The Arvon Foundation in England. The Undertaking is his most important book of essays, translated into seven languages, winner of the American Book Award and the Heartland Prize for nonfiction, and a finalist for the National Book Award.
