Frances H. Burnett (1849, Manchester, England - 1924, Plandome, United States) lost her father when she was just five years old. The family had to endure economic hardships and in 1865 moved to the United States. Eight years later Frances got married, but she had already managed to publish in some American magazines like Godey’s Lady’s Book, Godey’s, Peterson’s Ladies’ Magazine, Scribner’s Monthly, and Harper’s. She was 28 years old when That Lass O’ Lowrie’s (1877), her first novel, appeared. However, it was Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886) that contributed the most to her popularity during her lifetime. It was aimed, along with Sara Crewe (1888) and The Secret Garden (1911), at the young reader. The latter is considered her most valuable contribution.
