Baruch (de) Spinoza (24 November 1632 - 21 February 1677) was a Dutch philosopher of Portuguese Sephardi Jewish origin. One of the foremost exponents of 17th-century Rationalism and one of the early and seminal thinkers of the Enlightenment and modern biblical criticism including modern conceptions of the self and the universe he came to be considered "one of the most important philosophers-and certainly the most radical-of the early modern period." Inspired by the groundbreaking ideas of René Descartes, Spinoza became a leading philosophical figure of the Dutch Golden Age. Spinoza's given name, which means "Blessed", varies among different languages. In the Netherlands he used the Portuguese name Bento. In his works in Latin, he used the name Benedictus de Spinoza.

Baruch de Spinoza (1632–1677) fue un filósofo neerlandés de origen sefardí, considerado uno de los grandes racionalistas del siglo XVII y una figura central de la filosofía moderna. Nació en Ámsterdam, en el seno de una familia judía portuguesa que había huido de la Inquisición.

Su pensamiento rompió con la tradición religiosa de su tiempo, lo que le valió la excomunión de la comunidad judía en 1656. Spinoza defendió una visión panteísta: identificó a Dios con la naturaleza, planteando que todo lo que existe forma parte de una misma sustancia infinita. En su obra principal, Ética demostrada según el orden geométrico, desarrolló un sistema filosófico que unía metafísica, ética y teoría del conocimiento.

Spinoza también reflexionó sobre la política y la libertad de pensamiento, defendiendo la tolerancia y la democracia como fundamentos de una sociedad justa. Murió en La Haya en 1677, a los 44 años, a causa de una enfermedad pulmonar.

Su legado influyó profundamente en la Ilustración y en filósofos posteriores como Hegel, Nietzsche y Einstein.
