Escritor italiano, Emilio Salgari nació en Verona, Italia, el 21 de agosto de 1862, y falleció en Turín, Italia, el 25 de abril de 1911. Hijo de una familia de comerciantes, de joven sirvió a bordo de un barco que recorrió la costa Adriática y Mediterránea, pero no hay pruebas de que hiciera más viajes por mar, aunque aseguraba que los lugares exóticos que aparecían en sus libros se basaban en sitios que había visitado personalmente.

Salgari comenzó a prepararse en el Real Instituto Técnico Naval P. Sarpi de Venecia, pero no llegó a obtener el título de capitán que ansiaba. Sus novelas, llenas de acción, fueron muchas, pero probablemente sea conocido sobre todo por crear el personaje de Sandokán.

A pesar de su éxito, Salgari fue uno de los autores más vendidos de su generaciónl, vivió en una relativa miseria que, junto con el desequilibio mental de su esposa, la actriz de teatro Ida Peruzzi, con quien tuvo cuatro hijos, lo condujo a suicidarse en 1911 realizando el rito tradicional del Hara-kiri.

Salgari escribió en total ochenta y cuatro novelas e incontables relatos, destacando títulos como Los tigres de Mompracen o Los piratas de Malasia. Varios de sus libros han sido llevados al cine y su personaje principal, Sandokan, ha protagonizado una serie de televisión.
