Synopsis "The Great Thanksgiving Chase An Irish Immigrant's Story"

The Great Thanksgiving Chase - Synopsis

By Jane T. Downs

Set in Depression-era New York, The Great Thanksgiving Chase follows thirteen-year-old Jack Apple, an Irish immigrant's son who shoulders the role of 'man of the house' after his father leaves to find work. Jack hustles newspapers to keep food on the table for his mother and his little brother, Frank, who has fallen silent since their father left. Jack's stubborn courage mixes with quick thinking and a temper that sometimes gets ahead of him.

Jack becomes obsessed with a headline-making plan: at the end of Macy's 1931 Thanksgiving Parade, the store will release its giant character balloons and pay $25 to anyone who returns one intact. Jack is determined to find one of the downed balloons so he can claim the reward and help his family.

Through the Bernsteins, kind employers who give Mam housework and laundry, Jack befriends Carl Lee, Dr. Bernstein's gentle, special-needs adult son.  On Thanksgiving Day, a lucky break arrives: Dr. Bernstein is called away for a complicated delivery and asks Jack to stay with Carl Lee. Jack locks Carl Lee and Frank safely upstairs, intending to slip out, launch the Bernsteins' small sailboat, and position himself along the East River. But Carl Lee and Frank sneak aboard, and the three boys soon spot a massive fold of rubber snagged on rocks. It's the Big Brown Bear balloon. The boys must fight bullies and run from a pursuing security guard and finally manage to heave the deflated giant into the boat and push off.

A sudden squall slams them. The overloaded boat wallows; waves crash aboard. In a moment of peril and bravery, Carl Lee jumps into the freezing water, grabs the stern, and swims the boat back to the Bernsteins' dock, saving Jack and Frank...and the prize balloon. The boys lash the sodden balloon into the garage, breathless and euphoric. But their triumph turns to worry when Carl Lee falls ill from the icy water. Jack sits by his bedside, filled with guilt and fear that his reckless plan has caused harm to the one person who trusted him most. For the first time, he realizes that courage isn't just about daring adventures...it's about taking responsibility for others.

With help from kindly truck owner Mr. Papadakos, Jack delivers the intact balloon to Macy's. In a small, formal ceremony with Mr. Barg, Jack receives the $25 reward, a certificate 'like a giant check,' and a handshake he'll never forget. He tries to share the money, but Papadakos refuses, beaming with pride for the boy. Jack races home, places the envelope in Mam's hand, and sees hope return to her face.

Epilogue:

An epilogue closes the family arc: Jack's father returns in the spring of 1932, thin and worn, and Frank begins to speak again after his father's homecoming. Carl Lee remains Jack's dear friend for years, passing away at the age of 39. Frank grows into a gifted scientist who later works in the U.S. space program, and Jack channels his fists-and-fire into service as a career Marine. Above all, the chase cements Jack's belief that courage, loyalty, and hard work can carry a family through hard times.
