Status generalization has evolved over the past 25 years into a sophisticated set of theories of uncommon power and empirical utility. It refers to the process by which socially evaluated status characteristics (such as gender, ethnicity, age, wealth, and particular skills) influence face-to-face interaction, notably perceptions of competence and rates of participation and acceptance of influence.
