Mary Ann Shaffer (1934–2008) was an American writer, editor, librarian, and bookseller born in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Her most famous work is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, an epistolary novel that became an international success. The story, set in the post-World War II era, narrates the letters between Juliet Ashton and the members of a reading club on the island of Guernsey, who shared stories of resistance and camaraderie during the German occupation.

Shaffer's inspiration for the novel came after a visit to London in 1976, where she decided to travel to Guernsey and was trapped by a thick fog that prevented planes or ships from leaving. During the wait, she found a volume titled Jersey Under the Jack-Book, which sparked her fascination with the Channel Islands and the history of their occupation.

Before her death in 2008, Shaffer completed most of the novel, but it was her niece, Annie Barrows, who helped finish it. The work was published posthumously and has been translated into more than 20 languages, with over five million copies sold worldwide. It was also adapted into a film in 2018 by director Mike Newell.
