Der Traum ist ein zentrales Motiv der klassischen, japanischen Dichtung. Die Autorin dekonstruiert auf exemplarische Weise die in der japanischen Literaturwissenschaft und Literaturrezeption beliebte - und insbesondere bei der Erforschung von Frauenliteratur übliche - biographische Textdeutung. Sie bettet das Traummotiv mit intertextuellen Untersuchungsmethoden in den literaturhistorischen Kontext ein und verfolgt dieses zurück bis in die klassische chinesische Poesie. Das Bild der passiv wartenden Frau, die ihre unerfüllte Liebe in der Welt des Traums sucht, wird als Mythos entlarvt. Das Buch zeigt auf, dass es sich bei der lyrischen Umsetzung des Traummotivs um einen stark konventionalisierten, stilisierten Topos handelt. Dieser muss gleicherweise in von Frauen wie von Männern verfassten Gedichten als rein fiktionales Stilmittel betrachtet werden, mit dem bewusst in literarischer Form eine Ästhetik der Verzweiflung geschaffen wurde.
