Synopsis "Poema del Cid (in Spanish)"

En Candía, isla de Creta (Grecia), nació en el año 1883 Niko Kazantzakis. De niño fue testigo de la guerra librada por los patriotas cretenses contra los opresores turcos, acontecimiento cuyos recuerdos y protagonistas aparecen posteriormente en sus novelas.
En su juventud estudió derecho en Atenas, y luego, en París, asistió a los cursos de Bergson, quien ejerció sobre su vida y obra un influjo tan poderoso como el de Nietzsche. La pasión que puso en buscar la verdad y el bien para la humanidad fue causa de incesantes viajes. Pasó una temporada de retiro en el monte Athos; los años de la primera posguerra en Berlín, donde escribió Ascesis. Salvatores Dei y la primera versión de Buda; viajó varias veces a Rusia, movido por el entusiasmo y la admiración en lo que creía sería el nuevo rumbo de la justicia para los hombres. En China encontró el material para escribir una de sus principales obras teatrales: Buda, que logra a través de sus personajes una dimensión esencial de la condición humana: la lucha entre lo ideal y lo posible, el equilibrio entre el activismo y la contemplación.
Hacia los últimos años de su vida, se retiró a su residencia en Antibes, la más griega de las ciudades francesas, para dedicarse exclusivamente a escribir.
