He traveled a lot in his childhood due to his father's status as a navy officer. An illness resulted in him living in a wheelchair for almost his entire life. He studied Art at Bideford school, and dedicated himself to painting miniatures until he began writing in 1950.

He wrote children's novels, adventure stories, biographies, and primarily historical fiction novels, characterized by their meticulous writing and high literary quality, with much delicacy and lyricism.
