Lev Semionovich Vygotsky (1896–1934) was a prominent Soviet psychologist, known for his fundamental contributions to the development of learning psychology and education. He was born in Orsha, in the Russian Empire (now Belarus), and studied Law, Philosophy, and Literature before focusing on psychology. His work gained relevance in the 1920s and 30s, in a context of profound social and educational changes in the Soviet Union.

Vygotsky is best known for his sociocultural theory of cognitive development, which emphasizes the influence of the social environment and language on learning. He introduced key concepts such as the zone of proximal development (ZPD), which describes the distance between what a child can do alone and what they can achieve with the help of an adult or a more capable peer. He also highlighted the role of language as a mediating tool in the formation of thought.

Despite his early death at 37 due to tuberculosis, his work had a profound influence on psychology, especially in pedagogy, developmental psychology, and inclusive education. His legacy was rediscovered decades later and today remains a key reference in learning theories.
