Nigel Calder (1931–2014) was a prominent British science writer and broadcaster, known for his ability to explain complex scientific concepts in an accessible way to the general public. Born in London, he studied natural sciences at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He began his career as a physicist at the Mullard Research Laboratories, but in 1956 he joined the founding team of New Scientist magazine, where he was editor from 1962 to 1966. He later dedicated himself to writing and producing scientific documentaries, creating and scripting 13 series for the BBC and Channel 4, accompanied by books that explored topics such as the universe, the human mind, and the Earth

In 1972, he received the UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the popularization of science. Throughout his career, he wrote or edited at least 37 books, including Einstein’s Universe and The Chilling Stars, the latter co-written with Danish physicist Henrik Svensmark, in which he explored the influence of cosmic rays on Earth's climate. His focus on alternative theories about climate change generated controversy in the scientific community

Calder died on June 25, 2014, in Crawley, West Sussex, leaving a significant legacy in scientific dissemination
