CEF Level: A1. Helbling Readers: A great new series of graded reading material. Choose from well-loved classics and high-quality original fiction. Helbling Readers Red Series - A series of well-known classic stories by world-famous authors, that have been chosen and adapted, to appeal to young teenagers. Careful selection of stories with suitable content and language level has allowed the flavour of the originals to remain. Reflection boxes throughout the stories help understanding, and draw links with the students' own lives. While detailed Before and After reading activities help and check understanding. A clear introduction gives information about the author. This is the much-loved story of the four March sisters. Meg is the eldest and is about to fall in love. Then there's tomboy Jo who wants to be a writer. Kind Beth who always puts other people before herself, and finally there's Amy, the youngest and most precocious. Although times are difficult and their father is away at war, they never forget their sense of fun. Growing up is not always easy but it is very rewarding.

Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania, and after spending some time in Boston, died in Concord, Massachusetts.

The energy and independent spirit she had in her childhood stayed with her throughout her life and led her to take on various jobs to financially support her family. In 1854, she published her first book, Flower Fables, followed by more than thirty novels and story collections. However, her name would always be linked to Little Women, a novel she wrote between May and July 1868 at the request of her publishers.
