Este poema épico puntualiza que el amor triunfa sobre las flaquezas del ser humano, como le sucede a Dante por el amor que siente por Beatriz. Ella observa que Dante se ha perdido en placeres vanos, por ello le pide a Virgilio que le muestre los tormentos que se le avecinan si no vuelve al camino del bien. El mago Merlín es un hombre extraordinario, pero su existencia aún es un misterio. Hace muchos años, la isla de Britania era escenario de guerras internas por el control del territorio. Por eso, sólo los conocimientos de un sabio como Merlín podían ayudarlos.
