Das vorliegende Buch zur Ikonographie und Ikonologie Kaiser Karls IV. stellt den Begriff 'Porträtrealismus' in den Kontext einer herrscherikonographischen Betrachung und macht diesen zur Grundlage und zum Ausgangspunkt für die weiterführende ikonographische und ikonologische Untersuchung.Als zeitlicher Rahmen der Bildnisbetrachtung wurden das Geburts- und Sterbejahr Karls IV., 1316 und 1378 gewählt. Geografisch wurden - mit Ausnahme der sogenannten Altanszene der Marienkiche in Mühlhausen - ausschließlich die böhmischen Bildnisse behandelt.
