Das Musiktheater diente dort als Vehikel der Modernisierung und Europaisierung, die aber in einem Spannungsverhaltnis zur Begrundung einer nationalen Hochkultur stand. Der Text beginnt mit der spaten Aufklarungszeit, als in Rumanien die ersten Auffuhrungen im Musiktheater stattfanden, behandelt ausfuhrlich die Zeit des Russischen Protektorats und endet mit der Grundung des Rumanischen Nationaltheaters 1857. Der Fokus liegt auf den rumanischen Eliten, die das Musiktheater importierten und fur ihre Zwecke adaptierten, dem Publikum, der russischen Protektoratsverwaltung und europaischen Ensembles und Kunstlern, die in Rumanien auftraten und das dortige Musikleben pragten.
