Richard Courant fue un influyente matemático alemán-estadounidense, nacido en 1888 y reconocido por sus aportes tanto en la investigación como en la divulgación matemática. Discípulo de David Hilbert, se destacó en análisis matemático y ecuaciones diferenciales parciales, y más tarde emigró a Estados Unidos, donde fundó el Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences en la Universidad de Nueva York, un centro de referencia mundial en investigación matemática. Su labor fue fundamental para tender puentes entre la matemática teórica y sus aplicaciones prácticas.
