Esta edición reúne por primera vez, en un solo volumen, no sólo las narraciones que habitualmente se publicaron en las ediciones de Historias y Relatos sino también los textos agregados en el volumen VI de Gesammelte Schriften. Se agregan además las dos versiones del enigmático texto “Agesilaus Santander”, que no sólo Benjamin escribió durante su estancia en Ibiza –cuando compuso muchos de los relatos aquí incluidos–, sino también porque su ambiguo carácter de autobiografía ficcional ilumina aspectos de su narrativa. Es probable –puesto que, tratándose de Benjamin, nunca se sabe si no hay algún texto por descubrir o alguna edición reciente o remota por compulsar– que con este volumen el lector tenga la colección más completa hasta la fecha de las narraciones ficcionales de Walter Benjamin –por no usar, dada su particular teoría del narrador, el término convencional de “cuentos”.
Hemos titulado esta colección Historias desde la soledad, porque es el único título autónomo que utilizó Walter Benjamin para agrupar tres breves relatos y porque, asimismo, el autor usa una expresión similar en uno de los fragmentos de “España 1932”, que comienza con la frase: “Historia de la soledad”: “¿Cuánta tierra necesita un hombre para vivir?, se pregunta Tolstoi en uno sus relatos populares. Los anacoretas han dado la respuesta: su vida confinada en la más pequeña parcela de tierra se ha extendido al mundo entero”.

Walter Benjamin was a prominent philosopher, literary critic, and art and history theorist born in Berlin, Germany. His work and critical thinking have had a profound influence on 20th century cultural studies.
Benjamin was born into a wealthy Jewish family and grew up in an intellectually stimulating environment. From an early age, he showed an interest in literature, music, and art.
In the 1920s, after serving in the German army during World War I, he joined the Frankfurt School, a circle of German intellectuals and social critics interested in transforming Marxist ideas. There, he met other thinkers like Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer who were major influences on his work and worldview.
Throughout his life, Benjamin was also deeply interested in politics and social issues. During the years of the Weimar Republic, he actively participated in the cultural and literary field. However, the rise of Nazism to power in 1933 forced him to leave Germany. He first went into exile in Paris and after the French occupation, Benjamin tried to escape to Spain to embark towards the United States, but was detained at the French-Spanish border. Faced with the imminent threat of being handed over to the German authorities, the author decided to end his life.
