Sie steht in der Tradition der sozialpsychologischen Kleingruppenforschung und berücksichtigt darüber hinaus die neuere sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung zu sozialen Beziehungen im Internet, Erkenntnisse aus der pädagogisch-psychologischen Forschung zum Lernen in Gruppen, sowie zum computergestützten Gruppenlernen (CSCL). Es wird der Forschungsansatz des Interactive Research and Design verfolgt, der Intervention und Forschung im Feld verbindet. Die Ergebnisse werden für die zukünftige Konzeption und technische Gestaltung virtueller Lerngruppen in Hochschullehre und Weiterbildung diskutiert.
