Gewalt, Grauel und Verbrechen sind drei Fahnenworter, mit welchen das Elend des Ersten Weltkrieges beschrieben werden kann. Im vorliegenden Heft werden neue Forschungen zur Gewalteskalation des Ersten Weltkrieges prasentiert und daraus resultierende Diskurse in den Kriegs- und Nachkriegsgesellschaften nachgezeichnet. Hannes Leidinger erortert den Einfluss der k.u.k. Kriegsverbrechen auf die posthabsburgische Gesellschaft und ihre innenpolitischen Diskurse in der Ersten Republik. Verena Moritz analysiert in ihrem Beitrag die Behandlung von Kriegsgefangenen als Gegenstand der osterreichischen Pressepropaganda von 1914 bis 1918. Daniel Marc Segesser setzt sich am Beispiel internationaler juristischer Debatten uber Gewalt, Grauel und Verbrechen mit dem Diktum des Ersten Weltkrieges als Katastrophe der Wissenschaft auseinander. Oswald uberegger untersucht am Beispiel des Bewegungskrieges diverse Faktoren der Gewalteskalation in militarischen Offensiven. Violence, ferocity and crime are three keywords which describe the misery of the First World War. The present issue presents new researches on the escalation of violence of the First World War and examines discourses following the war and post war societies. Hannes Leidinger discusses the effects of the Imperial and Royal war crimes on the post house of Hausborg societies and discourses in domestic policy during the First Republic. Verena Moritz analyses the treatment of prisoners of war as subjects of the Austrian media propaganda from 1914 to 1918. Daniel Marc Segesser explores international legal debates on violence, ferocity and crime and discusses the dictum of the First World War as a disaster for science. Oswald uberegger uses the concept of maneuver warfare to discuss various factores which lead to violence escalations in military operations.
