1810, à l'Ile de France (actuelle Maurice). Pierre Munier, intègre et prospère planteur métis, se distingue dans la défense de l'île menacée par les Anglais, après avoir été refusé en raison de sa couleur de peau dans la garde nationale par M. de Malmédie, riche colon. Georges et Jacques, enfants de Munier, se défendent contre une provocation d'Henri, fils de Malmédie. Leur père, "ce héros qui lève la tête devant la mitraille et plie les genoux devant un préjugé", décide d'éloigner les deux frères, qui partent pour la France. Jacques se fait bientôt matelot et disparaît; quant à Georges, il reçoit à Paris la meilleure éducation et devient vite un jeune homme brillant, doué d'un sang-froid hors norme et d'une grande élévation morale. Quatorze années passent. Georges décide de regagner son île natale, avec un objectif: y vaincre le "préjugé de couleur" (on ne dit pas encore racisme) attaché à sa condition de mulâtre...

Alexandre Dumas is one of the most prolific and popular authors from France. He was born in 1802 in the city of Villers-Cotterets, and soon moved to Paris to work as a secretary for the Duke of Orléans. There, he completed his education on his own and began to take an interest in writing.
He started by writing plays, and then moved on to poems and long stories. However, his real success did not come until 1844, the year he released the work that would catapult him to fame: The Three Musketeers. The serial publication of this novel brought him a huge sum of money, but it also meant countless hours of work, many collaborators, and the production of up to eighty installments to meet the growing public demand.
After the publication of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas amassed a great fortune. However, his hedonistic nature led him to squander all he had earned and he soon found himself forced to exile in Belgium to escape his French creditors.
The Count of Monte Cristo, the pinnacle of the author's narrative, is considered one of the greatest adventure novels of all time.
