Pero siempre ha existido otra inspiración, no transmundana sino inmanente, basada en la ilustración del egoísmo y en el apasionado interés de una ética como amor propio, la cual no es menos social sino sólo menos hipócrita que la anterior. Dentro de esa corriente Fernando Savater se plantea cuestiones como la vinculación entre individuo y sociedad y el sentido cultural de la inmortalidad, en un diálogo con pensadores favorables y contrarios a ese planteamiento, que van de Aristóteles a Heidegger, de Schopenhauer a Foucault. Esta edición incorpora un ensayo inédito titulado “Las virtudes como necesidad y libertad”.
