Fue publicada en 1876. En este episodio se narran los sucesos posteriores al fallido intento del cura Matías Vinuesa para restaurar el absolutismo y los conflictos en el Gobierno liberal (dirigido en parte por los masones), mientras los realistas, intentarán recuperar el poder. EL GRANDE ORIENTE recoge, en su título, el nombre de una activa sociedad secreta que intervino poderosamente en los acontecimientos que agitaron la vida política española en el trienio constitucional que fue de 1820 a 1823.
