La novela presenta a Meursault, un hombre franco-argelino que vive con una actitud distante, pasiva y ajena a las normas y emociones que rigen la vida social. Indiferente ante la muerte de su madre y aparentemente incapaz de expresar arrepentimiento tras cometer un crimen, su comportamiento desconcierta y perturba a quienes lo rodean.

Más que juzgar el acto cometido, la sociedad condena su falta de emociones y su rechazo a fingir sentimientos que no experimenta. Esta ruptura con las convenciones morales y sociales lo lleva a un juicio en el que Meursault es castigado no solo por su crimen, sino por ser un “extraño” frente a los valores aceptados, conduciéndolo finalmente a su sentencia de muerte.
