En tiempos del comunismo, los miembros del partido recibían cada mes las actualizaciones de la gran Enciclopedia Sovietica. Cuando en julio de 1953 el temido Beria fue por fin detenido, la enciclopedia aún contenía una larga y elogiosa entrada dedicada a el. A los pocos días de la detención a los camaradas les llegó un sobre con una hoja y unas instrucciones: se les pedía que, con sumo cuidado y la ayuda de una cuchilla de afeitar, recortaran el texto sobre Beria y lo sustituyeran por el que se les adjuntaba, referido al estrecho de Bering. Así, Bering sustituía a un Beria caído en desgracia, que, siguiendo el metodo habitual de las autoridades sovieticas, desaparecía sin dejar rastro.

Este ensayo, que ganó el Grand Prix de la Science-Fiction y Anagrama publica por primera vez directamente en la colección "Compactos", habla de la historia en condicional, la que pudo ser y no fue. Habla de la ucronía: de que hubiera sucedido si la nariz de Cleopatra hubiese sido más corta o Napoleón hubiera salido victorioso de Waterloo... Carrere mezcla casualidad y causalidad, realidad y ficción, y nos propone un juego de lo más provoca.

Emmanuel Carrère (Paris, December 9, 1957) is a French writer, screenwriter, and filmmaker known for his ability to blend reality and fiction in his works. His literary career spans novels, biographies, and essays that explore the human condition and the complexities of identity.

Among his most notable works are "The Adversary" (2000), a non-fiction novel that tells the real story of Jean-Claude Romand; "Limonov" (2011), a fictional biography of the controversial Russian writer and politician Eduard Limonov; and "The Kingdom" (2014), a deep reflection on the origins of Christianity. Carrère has been awarded prizes such as the Femina Prize in 1995 and the Renaudot Prize in 2011. In 2021, he received the Princess of Asturias Award for Literature for his contribution to contemporary literature.
