Arthur L. Guptill (Gorham, Maine, 1891–1956) was an architect, painter, author, and educator specialized in artistic techniques. Co-founder of Watson-Guptill Publications and co-editor of American Artist magazine, he was educated at Pratt Institute and MIT. He developed a diverse career as an illustrator, art director, and professor at institutions like Pratt and Brooklyn.

He is especially remembered for his instructional manuals on technical and artistic drawing, with no evidence of literary awards to his name. Among his most notable works are Rendering in Pen and Ink (1976/1997, technical drawing/art literature), Drawing with Pen and Ink (revised in 1961 and 1980, instructional art), and Pencil Drawing Step-By-Step (1980, instructional art). All are non-fiction works, focused on drawing techniques using pen, brush, and pencil.
