¿Por qué sentimos que prácticamente no existe el tiempo libre? Llegamos a casa después del trabajo y, en vez de encontrar un momento de ocio o descanso, nos enfrentamos a las demandantes tareas domésticas y de cuidado.

A partir de la crisis global del capitalismo y de la aceleración del desarrollo tecnológico, surgieron distintas corrientes de pensamiento que abordan la cuestión del postrabajo con proyectos que pretenden reducir al mínimo las jornadas laborales. Pero esos proyectos están enfocados fundamentalmente en empleos asalariados masculinos y desatienden las tareas asociadas a la reproducción social que recaen sobre todo en las mujeres.

Al examinar el vínculo entre la historia del hogar y la tecnología, desde la llegada del agua de red o el uso de electrodomésticos hasta la reciente la irrupción de las “casas inteligentes” o de la tercerización de tareas mediante plataformas, Helen Hester y Nick Srnicek demuestran que, lejos de reducirse, la carga del trabajo doméstico sigue ocupando una parte sustancial de nuestras vidas. Lo que se encuentra detrás de esta paradoja es el hecho de que, en la medida en que no se transforme el imaginario social que orienta la creación de estas tecnologías y el conjunto de las relaciones sociales en las que se inscriben, los cambios tecnológicos no tendrán nunca la capacidad en sí de liberar tiempo.

Este libro produce un diagnóstico contundente y a la vez un esquema programático sobre cómo podrían organizarse las actividades reproductivas en una sociedad de transición poslaboral inspirado en los aportes feministas, en novedosos proyectos ecosocialistas y en el resurgimiento de la noción de planificación económica. Un mundo poslaboral debería acompañar las funciones de cuidado actualmente asignadas a la esfera de lo privado mediante organizaciones de gestión comunal que reduzcan la presión sobre la familia nuclear. El objetivo es alejarse del desarrollo capitalista de las tecnologías domésticas aisladas para ir hacia un diseño colectivo que instale también el ocio como derecho. La ampliación del tiempo libre es vital para recuperar espacios deliberativos colectivos y de imaginación crítica que nos permitan crear las instituciones necesarias para guiar conscientemente el desarrollo de la humanidad.

Nick Srnicek (Canada, 1982) is an academic and writer specialized in digital economy and contemporary political theory. PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics, he is currently a professor in the Department of Digital Humanities at King's College London. His work focuses on the intersection between technology, economy, and politics, being a prominent figure in the accelerationism movement and in debates about postcapitalism. He has been editor of Millennium: Journal of International Studies and has collaborated with various international academic institutions.
