«Un perro cenizo con un lucero en la frente irrumpió en los vericuetos del mercado el primer domingo de diciembre, revolcó mesas de fritangas, desbarató tenderetes de indios y toldos de lotería, y de paso mordió a cuatro personas que se le atravesaron en el camino. Tres eran esclavos negros. La otra fue Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles, hija única del marqués de Casalduero, que había ido con una sirvienta mulata a comprar una ristra de cascabeles para la fiesta de sus doce años.» El 26 de octubre de 1949 el reportero Gabriel García Márquez fue enviado al antiguo convento de Santa Clara, que iba a ser demolido para edificar sobre él un hotel de cinco estrellas, a presenciar el vaciado de las criptas funerarias y a cubrir la noticia. Se exhumaron los restos de un virrey del Perú y su amante secreta, un obispo, varias abadesas, un bachiller de artes y una marquesa. Pero la sorpresa saltó al destapar la tercera hornacina del altar mayor: se desparramó una cabellera de color cobre, de veintidós metros y once centímetros de largo, perteneciente a una niña. En la lápida apenas se leía el nombre: Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles. «Mi abuela me contaba de niño la leyenda de una marquesita de doce años cuya cabellera le arrastraba como una cola de novia, que había muerto del mal de rabia por el mordisco de un perro, y era venerada en los pueblos del Caribe por sus muchos milagros. La idea de que esa tumba pudiera ser la suya fue mi noticia de aquel día, y el origen de este libro».

Gabriel García Márquez (1927-2014), son of the Colombian Caribbean and immortal voice of Spanish narrative, is one of the most influential literary minds of the 20th century. Winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982, his talent transcended the boundaries of paper: he was a novelist, short story writer, essayist, screenwriter, film critic, and above all, a thinker committed to the pains and hopes of his homeland and all of Latin America. Architect of magical realism, he masterfully wove the everyday and the fantastic, making reality blur among yellow butterflies, eternal rains, and towns where the impossible was part of everyday life. His work gave life to a unique narrative universe, where history breathes, dreams, and bleeds intensely.

Among his most emblematic titles are One Hundred Years of Solitude, No One Writes to the Colonel, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, The General in His Labyrinth, Love in the Time of Cholera, and Strange Pilgrims, among others. In 2002 he opened the door to his memory with Living to Tell the Tale. In 2012, All the Stories were published, and, as if literary destiny refused to close the curtain on him, in 2024 his posthumous and unpublished novel See You in August was released.
