This volume examines the philosophical fate of the notion of “world” at a time when contemporary crises and pluralist ontologies appear to challenge its unity. Between critiques of universalism and explorations of new forms of plurality, the contributions gathered here investigate the conditions under which it remains possible—or even necessary—to rethink the world as a shared horizon of meaning.

The book series Beyond Universalism | Partager l’universel problematizes universality after Western universalism. Globalization does not necessarily entail a universal awareness. Rather, we witness a wide array of cultural, relativistic, and racist contestations of a common world. But how can universality be addressed after the necessary epistemic and ethical critique of Western universalism? Building on the importance of such concepts as materiality and reparation, narration and translation, this series seeks to understand how a new consciousness of universality is under way of being produced. How do contemporary cultural and social practices open up concrete settings so as to create experiences, reflections and agencies of a shared humanity?

The volumes of the series are peer-reviewed.

La collection Beyond Universalism | Partager l’universel pose le problème de l’universalité après l’universalisme occidental. La mondialisation n’implique pas nécessairement la conscience de faire partie d’un monde commun – en témoigne un large éventail de contestations culturelles, relativistes et racistes. Mais comment aborder l’universel après la nécessaire critique épistémique et éthique de l’universalisme occidental ? En s’appuyant sur des concepts tels que la matérialité et la réparation, la narration et la traduction, cette collection cherche à comprendre comment des pratiques culturelles et sociales contemporaines produisent, à partir de contextes concrets, des expériences, des réflexions et des agentivités qui contribuent à faire émerger une humanité partagée.

The very idea of “world” has become fragile in an age of geopolitical fragmentation, ecological crisis, and pluralist ontologies. Can the world still be conceived as a unified horizon of meaning, or must philosophy abandon this totalizing concept?

Bringing together philosophers, literary scholars, and writers, this volume examines contemporary debates on the notion of world—from critiques of metaphysical totality to pluralist ontologies that question the very existence of the world as a unified whole. Engaging thinkers from Kant and Heidegger to contemporary new realists, the contributions explore whether the concept of world should be rejected, transformed, or redefined in light of the multiplicity of cultures, forms of life, and fields of meaning.

At the intersection of ontology, ecology, and aesthetics, the book asks how a fragile yet shared world might still be thought—and possibly rebuilt—today.

L’idée même de « monde » apparaît aujourd’hui fragilisée par les crises géopolitiques, les bouleversements écologiques et l’émergence d’ontologies pluralistes. Le monde peut-il encore être pensé comme un horizon commun de sens, ou la philosophie doit-elle renoncer à ce concept totalisant ?

Réunissant philosophes, critiques littéraires et écrivains, ce volume examine les débats contemporains autour de la notion de monde, des critiques de la totalité métaphysique aux ontologies pluralistes qui en contestent l’unité même. En dialogue avec des penseurs allant de Kant et Heidegger aux nouveaux réalistes contemporains, les contributions interrogent la possibilité de rejeter, de transformer ou de redéfinir le monde à partir de la multiplicité des cultures, des formes de vie et des champs de sens.

À la croisée de l’ontologie, de l’écologie et de l’esthétique, l’ouvrage réfléchit aux conditions sous lesquelles un monde commun, fragile mais partageable, peut encore être pensé — et peut-être reconstruit — aujourd’hui.
