Mark Van Doren (1894-1972) nació en Hope, Illinois, y obtuvo su maestría y doctorado en la Universidad de Columbia, donde impartió clases de literatura durante casi cuarenta años y entre cuyos alumnos se encontraban Thomas Merton, John Berryman y Allen Ginsberg.
