Synopsis "The Buick Lightning"

A skinny kid. An abandoned 1955 Buick. A mountain of powder snow. An idea too good not to try. When a boy with man-sized hands finds a blue-and-white Buick Century half-buried in a snowy ravine, he pries off its enormous steel hood to help pack a tubing run. Then he discovers something much more interesting: the hood slides. His new plan is simple — get four other boys to help drag it a quarter-mile up the mountain, pile aboard, and ride it down. What follows is a hilarious, exhausting, and increasingly hair-raising adventure as the homemade sled gathers speed, launches over bumps, scatters the crowd below, and sheds riders one by one — except for the kid who hangs on, until almost the end. Illustrated throughout, The Buick Lightning Sled is a true story of boyhood ingenuity, stubbornness, bravado, and the glorious recklessness of childhood — when an abandoned car hood, a snowy mountain, and a bad idea could become the adventure of a lifetime. Every word of this story is true, except for the boys' names.
