Synopsis "Stolen Days"

Luanda, August 1975. The soldiers have chalked a line across the wall of her parents’ house for the second time, and there is a freighter leaving for Walvis Bay. She is the daughter of a customs officer, a woman who grew up knowing her place in the colony’s order. Francisco is her father’s driver, a careful, mission-educated man who believes that papers open roads. Their six-year-old son, Hélio, believes his father is a pilot who flies far away, and he holds his tin aeroplane up to every plane that passes. That lie was told to protect him. Now it is written into every document they carry. Before the ship reaches the desert coast, she will have lost the one thing she meant to carry through. What follows is not flight but waiting: camps behind South African wire, where the days are counted out in ration queues, roll calls and lists. Thousands of people are kept idle while independence is declared over their heads. Stolen Days is a novel about the exodus history barely remembers. It is also about a love the colony would not name, and a mother who has to find a way to say her son’s name aloud.
