Synopsis "I Have a Dirty Soul"

What if being a good person has never meant having only good thoughts? You can be happy for someone and still feel jealous. You can do something kind and still hope somebody notices. You can forgive someone and quietly wish they appreciated how forgiving you were.I Have a Dirty Soul is a collection of small, honest confessions about the messy contradictions of being human-the jealousy we would rather not admit, the kindness that comes with mixed motives, the satisfaction of being right, and the uncomfortable thoughts we would rather pretend we never had. With warmth, humor, and an unflinching eye for ordinary life, Elise Merritt explores the space between the person we believe ourselves to be and the person who occasionally appears in our less flattering moments. This is not a self-help manual, and it does not promise a cleaner, purer version of you. Instead, it asks a more interesting question: If our inner lives are imperfect, does that make our good choices any less meaningful? For anyone who has ever caught themselves thinking something they would never say out loud-and then wondered what that thought says about them. Not a guide to being good. Just a more honest look at being human.
